When Eragon, a young farm boy, finds a polished blue stone in the forest, he thinks it is the lucky discovery that will perhaps help buy his family food for the winter. When the stone brings a dragon hatchling, Eragon realizes he has stumbled upon a legacy older than the kingdom itself: the legacy of the Dragon Riders.
